macOS Compatibility

Compatibility layer Rating Notes
CrossOver Perfect Full resolution (nearly 4k) ~60 fps, after applying fixes as suggested for DXVK [1] .
Wine Perfect Visual bug at the start menu where none of the game options are visible (but make an audible noise when you hover over it). However, it's easy to determine which version you're hovering over (left = Mass Effect 1, middle = Mass Effect 2, right = Mass Effect 3). Once you click on your preferred version, it's smooth sailing from there (and there are no other bugs, in my experience).[2]
Virtualization
Parallels Perfect Mass Effect 1 and 2 have good framerates at 1280x720 with some stutter, Mass Effect 3 has lower framerates with more stutter but still playable.[3]

Issues fixed

Won't launch in CrossOver

Replace launcher with this mod.

Won't launch in CrossOver on Steam Client

QTWebEngineProcess.exe error / EA Play starting error

Start the game from Origin
  1. Connect your Origin account to Steam via web (https://www.ea.com)
  2. Install Origin in the same bottle where you installed Steam. Update: probably outdated, Origin doesn't install with error 20:403, you need to install EA App for Steam instead, then it will prompt you to log in
  3. Open Origin App and Start Mass Effect from its page in your Origin library. Update: don't need to do that, you just run it normally via Steam, and now it opens correctly

Those steps should bypass the faulty launch of EA Play and the game should start as expected in regular conditions.

Won't launch in Game Porting Toolkit on Steam Client

Error forcing you to download/use EA App

Continue Using Origin[4]

Running the game using EA App after launching on Steam doesn't work, so use this script [1] to continue using Origin

No audio in Mass Effect 1

Delete OpenAL32.dll[5]
  1. Navigate to /Binaries/Win64/
  2. Rename file OpenAL32.dll to OpenAL32.dll.bak, or alternatively delete it
