macOS Compatibility

Compatibility layer Rating Notes
CrossOver Playable The game should be playable as in 30+ in most of the apple silicon Macs and 60 is easily achievable even with increased settings in M3 Pro and has unique dual sense controller support which adjusts the trigger resistance. The game has some glitches that require a reset.[2]

This game runs almost perfectly on baseline MacBook M4 Pro.[3]

Plays very well on Mac Mini M4 Pro (24GB) with certain settings configured.[4]
Wine Unknown
Virtualization
Parallels Unknown

Availability

Issues fixed

Stuck on loading screen

Oblivion Remastered would hang on loading screens. Everything worked fine upon first launch, but after saving and reopening, it often froze — sometimes even before the Bethesda logo.

Adjust config file(s), kill lingering processes, and modify resolution[5]
  1. Adjust .ini files: Set resolution, enable borderless fullscreen, and make read-only
  2. Execute pkill -f in Terminal to clean lingering processes related to CrossOver, Wine, and OblivionRemastered.exe
  3. Change MacBook's resolution (with the game open), then change it back
This seems to force a refresh or restart of whatever is getting stuck between CrossOver and the game’s renderer

"Alex Murphy (Executive Producer, Virtuos): The original Oblivion is still the heart and soul of the remaster, but we use Unreal Engine 5 to help achieve all our visual goals. We think of the Oblivion game engine as the brain and Unreal 5 as the body. The brain drives all the world logic and gameplay, and the body brings to life the experience that players have loved for almost 20 years."

"This game runs quite well on M3 Pro.

Everything set on Low but textures on high, FSR on Performance, inside of a dungeon-like area im getting consistent 40 FPS on an external monitor 3440x1440.

The game seems to freeze sometimes when trying open the settings screen, happened bunch of times but couldn't exactly recognize the trigger.

THE GAME HAS PS5 CONTROLLER SUPPORT ON TRIGGERS ! When you get fatigued, the trigger gets harder to press

UPDATE 1 : Im on 1512x982 default m3 pro resolution, All quality set to high, FSRS 3 is set to Balanced and FSRS Frame generation on, im getting 50-60 fps in an outside area, however the fps is very unstable and rapidly shifts between 45-60 and there's considerable screen tearing even when v-sync is on. Still testing will update his post

UPDATE 2 : I seem to have found a good balance with the graphic options, Everything on high except shadows, foliage, post-processing, global illumination reflection on medium, hair and cloth on low, disable screen space reflections and put FSRS on Quality im in the area I screenshotted below and my fps is rapidly changing according to the in game fps counter between 53-60 FPS. Quite happy with the purchase

UPDATE 3 : The game has some glitches it seems at least for Macs I suppose, when you turn off frame gen and turn it on again the game is glitchy for a while, in addition, sometimes the game simply freezes or displays corrupt images and requires a reset. Some areas also have really low fps for some reason, even without many entities/textures around. Hopefully crossover team can look into the glitches.

"Firstly, I am using crossover with D3DMetal and M Sync. No extra settings on crossover.

Secondly, my settings in game are all on low except textures are on High, and Global Illumination is on Medium. I believe you can get away with a couple more things on Medium/High, but I am quite satisfied with where I am at. I am using FSR on Performance, and my frame generation is off. (Although having frame gen on is useful for some folks)

Lastly, and most importantly, I replaced my engine.ini with this custom one from Nexus. It's an absolute godsend, and made the game perfectly playable for me! (link: https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivionremastered/mods/1396?tab=files&file_id=3848 )

Without the above, I was getting insane stuttering in the world, and going in and out of areas would sometimes cause my game to freeze at 1-3 fps.

"I now have a way better experience with gameplay performance with the following improvements:
    • Loading screens when entering doors is now immediate. I used to have to wait a whole minute or so before the next scene or area was loaded up.
    • I for whatever reason no longer experience crashes. I was able to play 5 hours straight last night.

    **Here are my settings:**

    • Window Mode — Borderless
    • Display Resolution — 1920 × 1080
    • Select Monitor — (default)
    • Resolution Scale — 50 %
    • V-Sync — Off
    • Frame-Rate Limit — Uncapped
    • Show FPS — Off
    • Show VRAM — Off
    • Brightness Intensity — 0
    • FOV (1st-Person) — 75
    • Shadow Quality — Medium
    • Global Illumination Quality — High
    • Texture Quality — High
    • Reflection Quality — Medium
    • Post-Processing Quality — High
    • Hair Quality — High
    • Cloth Quality — High
    • Lumen Hardware RT — Off
    • Lumen Hardware RT Lighting Mode — Low
    • Lumen Software RT Quality — Low
    • Anti-Aliasing — TSR (locked)
    • Upscaling Technique — FSR
    • FSR 3 Mode — Balanced
    • FSR 3 Sharpness — 0
    • FSR 3 Frame Generation — Off

  5. Reddit (/r/MacGaming) - Fix for Oblivion Remastered getting stuck on loading screens - last accessed on 2025-05-04
"I was having issues with Oblivion Remastered hanging on loading screens. The first time I launched the game everything worked fine, but after saving and reopening, it often froze — sometimes even before the Bethesda logo. I tried a few things:
    • Adjusted .ini files (set resolution, enabled borderless fullscreen, made them read-only).
    • Used pkill -f in Terminal to clean lingering processes related to CrossOver, Wine, and OblivionRemastered.exe.

This helped the game launch again, but I still had to set graphics to low just to load a save.

Here’s the workaround that worked consistently for me:
Whenever the game freezes on a loading screen (either at startup or when entering a new area), I change the resolution of my MacBook, then change it back. This seems to force a refresh or restart of whatever is getting stuck between CrossOver and the game’s renderer. After that, the game runs fine — even at high settings.

It's not ideal, but it's reliable. Hopefully this helps someone else.
If anyone finds a more permanent fix, please let me know!

    TL;DR:

If Oblivion Remastered freezes on loading, change your MacBook’s screen resolution (with the game open), then revert it. It forces the game to resume.
